A100-year maximum flood susceptibility mapping using integrated hydrological and hydrodynamic models: Kelantan River Corridor, Malaysia.

    Get PDF
The Kelantan River is located in the northeastern part of Peninsular Malaysia and presents a great challenge in terms of long and recurring floods. The recent floods, in the year 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 due to heavy monsoons rainfall have triggered these events along Kelantan River Basin. This paper summarizes the findings of the flood susceptibility analysis using hydrological and hydrodynamic models with the aid of GIS tools and remote sensing data. Terrain information such as historical flooded areas for the year 2007 was extracted from RADARSAT images. Further, digital elevation model and precipitation information were updated to enable the quantification of flood-associated attributes. For hydrological and hydrodynamic analyses, data obtained from Department of Irrigation and Drainage, Government of Malaysia, has been used corresponding to rain gauge/discharge stations along the Kelantan River. Data on daily and hourly average discharge and peak discharge are modelled for all the stations for different periods. Probability density moisture combined with rainfall simulation models was applied to determine the maximum flood susceptibility map. Results indicate that the flood-prone areas delineated on this map correspond to areas that would be inundated by significant flooding (approximately the 100-year flood)

Synthesis and X-ray single crystal structure analysis of the compound {[Ag2(μ2-bpym)(μ-O-NO3)2]}n, (1), (where bpym = 2,2′-bipyrimidine) are presented. Compound (1) has a (6,3)-2D honeycomb structure with a tetrahedral coordination geometry around the Ag(I) ion. In contrary to the solid state structural investigation, ESI-MS for (1) in solution shows a strong peak at m/z 423.0269 which indicates that the [Ag(bpym)2]+ cation is dominating instead of [Ag2(bpym)]2+. The anti-microbial activity of (1) was screened against 15 multi-drug resistant bacteria in comparison to silver(I) sulphadiazine and it showed a high activity against Burkholderia mallei which causes glanders; with a MIC value of 4 μg/ml

Thalamic activity and biochemical changes in individuals with neuropathic pain following spinal cord injury

There is increasing evidence relating thalamic changes to the generation and/or maintenance of neuropathic pain. We have recently reported that neuropathic orofacial pain is associated with altered thalamic anatomy, biochemistry, and activity, which may result in disturbed thalamocortical oscillatory circuits. Despite this evidence, it is possible that these thalamic changes are not responsible for the presence of pain per se, but result as a consequence of the injury. To clarify this subject, we compared brain activity and biochemistry in 12 people with below-level neuropathic pain after complete thoracic spinal cord injury with 11 people with similar injuries and no neuropathic pain and 21 age- and gender-matched healthy control subjects. Quantitative arterial spinal labelling was used to measure thalamic activity, and magnetic resonance spectroscopy was used to determine changes in neuronal variability quantifying N-acetylaspartate and alterations in inhibitory function quantifying gamma amino butyric acid. This study revealed that the presence of neuropathic pain is associated with significant changes in thalamic biochemistry and neuronal activity. More specifically, the presence of neuropathic pain after spinal cord injury is associated with significant reductions in thalamic N-acetylaspartate, gamma amino butyric acid content, and blood flow in the region of the thalamic reticular nucleus. Spinal cord injury on its own did not account for these changes. These findings support the hypothesis that neuropathic pain is associated with altered thalamic structure and function, which may disturb central processing and play a key role in the experience of neuropathic pain.NHMR

Series and integral representations of the Taylor coefficients of the Weierstrass sigma-function

We provide two kinds of representations for the Taylor coefficients of the Weierstrass σ\sigma-function σ(;Γ)\sigma(\cdot;\Gamma) associated to an arbitrary lattice Γ\Gamma in the complex plane C=R2\mathbb{C}=\mathbb{R}^2 - the first one in terms of the so-called Hermite-Gauss series over Γ\Gamma and the second one in terms of Hermite-Gauss integrals over C\mathbb{C}.Comment: 12 page

Thiosemicarbazone copper complexes as competent catalysts for olefin cyclopropanations

    Get PDF
New copper complexes of several thiosemicarbazones have been prepared and characterized. All complexes have been prepared by employing Cu (II) acetate hydrate, but analytical and spectroscopical data for the isolated complexes revealed that in most cases a reduction to copper (I) occurred. Cyclopropanation reactions of several olefins by ethyldiazoacetate (EDA) in the presence of catalytic amounts of the complexes were examined. The reported results showed that all complexes are competent catalysts for the cyclopropanation reaction of unactivated olefins. Cyclopropanes were obtained in high yields (up to 97%, TON up to 18,400) with moderate to excellent diastereoselectivities (up to >99%)

Search for displaced vertices arising from decays of new heavy particles in 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS

    Get PDF
We present the results of a search for new, heavy particles that decay at a significant distance from their production point into a final state containing charged hadrons in association with a high-momentum muon. The search is conducted in a pp-collision data sample with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV and an integrated luminosity of 33 pb^-1 collected in 2010 by the ATLAS detector operating at the Large Hadron Collider. Production of such particles is expected in various scenarios of physics beyond the standard model. We observe no signal and place limits on the production cross-section of supersymmetric particles in an R-parity-violating scenario as a function of the neutralino lifetime. Limits are presented for different squark and neutralino masses, enabling extension of the limits to a variety of other models.Comment: 8 pages plus author list (20 pages total), 8 figures, 1 table, final version to appear in Physics Letters

Measurement of the polarisation of W bosons produced with large transverse momentum in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS experiment

This paper describes an analysis of the angular distribution of W->enu and W->munu decays, using data from pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2010, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 35 pb^-1. Using the decay lepton transverse momentum and the missing transverse energy, the W decay angular distribution projected onto the transverse plane is obtained and analysed in terms of helicity fractions f0, fL and fR over two ranges of W transverse momentum (ptw): 35 < ptw < 50 GeV and ptw > 50 GeV. Good agreement is found with theoretical predictions. For ptw > 50 GeV, the values of f0 and fL-fR, averaged over charge and lepton flavour, are measured to be : f0 = 0.127 +/- 0.030 +/- 0.108 and fL-fR = 0.252 +/- 0.017 +/- 0.030, where the first uncertainties are statistical, and the second include all systematic effects.Comment: 19 pages plus author list (34 pages total), 9 figures, 11 tables, revised author list, matches European Journal of Physics C versio

Observation of a new chi_b state in radiative transitions to Upsilon(1S) and Upsilon(2S) at ATLAS

    Get PDF
The chi_b(nP) quarkonium states are produced in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV and recorded by the ATLAS detector. Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.4 fb^-1, these states are reconstructed through their radiative decays to Upsilon(1S,2S) with Upsilon->mu+mu-. In addition to the mass peaks corresponding to the decay modes chi_b(1P,2P)->Upsilon(1S)gamma, a new structure centered at a mass of 10.530+/-0.005 (stat.)+/-0.009 (syst.) GeV is also observed, in both the Upsilon(1S)gamma and Upsilon(2S)gamma decay modes. This is interpreted as the chi_b(3P) system.Comment: 5 pages plus author list (18 pages total), 2 figures, 1 table, corrected author list, matches final version in Physical Review Letter
